Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) is a contract used to regulate the transfer of research materials between IU and other organizations. It defines the rights of the supplier and recipient with respect to the transferred material, its derivatives and related information. It prevents the materials supplier from losing control of the material and use of the research, protects a researcher`s existing and potential intellectual property, and ensures that the transfer is not contrary to the federal rules and rights granted in other research project agreements. For the user interface, all incoming and outgoing MTAs are verified, negotiated and signed by the OTT. The individual examiner is not allowed to sign MTA on behalf of the university. IU researchers are strongly encouraged to contact OTT to put an MTA before sending research materials such as chemical compounds, new materials, plant seeds, bacteria, cell lines, plasmids and animals. In order to expedite the verification and negotiation process, IU investigators are encouraged to contact THE OTT as soon as possible after receiving MTA from other organizations.
